Who was Eva M. Long?
The daughter of two immigrants, Eva was raised by her young mother and aunt after her parent's separation. She grew up hungry for knowledge, love, and a place to belong. She graduated from Wiley High School, married Ralph Long, and after being told they could not have children, gave birth to their only child. Eva longed to return to school and when their daughter began kindergarten, Eva enrolled in Indiana State University with the goal of becoming a teacher. She student taught at Rankin and then landed her dream job at Terre Town Elementary. She found the place she belonged. Every student was a gift to Eva. Every day with them was a blessing. She strove to give them that which she had always wanted -- knowledge, love, and a place to belong. While teaching, she earned her Masters in Education at Indiana State University. She excelled in every master's class. Her only grade below an "A" was in aerospace. In that course, she built a functioning rocket and received high marks on the project. The last assignment involved flying from Hulman Airport to an Ohio airport. Eva was afraid of heights. She boldly got on the plane. She put on the seat belt. But at the end of the runway, the tiny 4'11" teacher from Terre Town Elementary made the pilot turn the plane around and let her off. She took the B+ in aerospace -- the only time she settled for less in her her pursuit of education.
